Write the book.
Keep the world straight.

Unwritten is a calm, fast writing app for novelists and worldbuilders. Markdown that renders as you type, a story bible that finds every mention, and a timeline that keeps your dates honest. On your Mac and iPad, online or off.

Sign in with your ThrottleStack account. Your manuscript stays plain Markdown.

What it does

Everything a long book needs, and nothing it doesn’t.

Unwritten keeps the writing in front and the bookkeeping close by: who’s where, what happened when, and which chapter still needs a plan.

A live editor that keeps the syntax quiet

Write in plain Markdown and see the page, not the punctuation. Headings, bold, highlights, links, checklists, callouts and tables render as you type; the marks only show where your cursor is, like Obsidian’s Live Preview. Focus mode, typewriter scroll, and autosave that never asks.

Links and backlinks

Type [[ to link any note, alias or heading. Every note shows what links back to it, so a minor character never gets lost.

Story bible

Characters, places, subplots and events, each its own note. Unwritten finds every mention by name, alias, link or property across the whole manuscript.

Timeline

See scenes in story order or on a calendar by in-story date, with a lane per subplot or main character.

Chapters and plans

Chapters in reading order, grouped by part, with each plan beside the chapter it becomes. Word counts for every file, folder and the whole book.

Every save is a revision

Look back at any version of a chapter, compare two, and bring an old paragraph back.

Bring your Obsidian vault

Drop a folder in. Unwritten reads your Markdown, [[wikilinks]], embeds and frontmatter as they are, skips .obsidian and .trash, and asks before replacing anything. Your words stay plain text, and you can export a zip any time.

Timeline

Know what happened when, to whom.

Give a scene a date in its properties and it lands on the timeline. Switch between story order and calendar order to catch the week where nothing happens, or the Tuesday that happens twice.

  • One lane per subplot or main character
  • Dates come from the notes themselves, so there’s nothing to keep in sync
  • Click any event to open the scene
Offline first · Mac + iPad

Write anywhere. It catches up.

Every vault lives on your device first, so Unwritten opens instantly and works on a plane, in a cabin, or anywhere the Wi‑Fi gives up. When you’re back online it syncs through your ThrottleStack account.

  • A clear status at all times: Synced, Syncing, or how many edits are waiting
  • Changes from two devices merge on their own; if you both rewrote the same paragraph, you choose which to keep
  • Sign in with ThrottleStack in your browser, so every sign-in method works, passkeys included
  • Link a vault to a ThrottleStack project and the manuscript shows up right beside the work

Your next chapter is still unwritten.

Unwritten for Mac is in beta. Ask for early access and we’ll send it your way as soon as it’s ready.
